Fans across Greater Manchester watch England beat Croatia

England fans around Greater Manchester have watched their country beat Croatia in their first Euro 2020 match. (A picture from some Manchester pubs in 2009. The Grey Horse Inn was one of many showing the England game today). All of those will be hoping that England fans will be hoping that they could reach the final of a major tournament - and win - for the first time since wonderful summer of 1966. Staff at the Grey Horse were certainly getting into the spirit of things. Raheem Sterling becomes MBE

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling has become an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours for his services to fighting racism across the sporting industry. (Raheem Sterling playing for Manchester City in a pre season friendly in 2017) Sterling, 26, has been campaigning for racial equality on and off the pitch continually since 2017. Raheem Sterling, who is currently representing England in the European Championships, has told various outlets: "Receiving this honour is a fantastic feeling and a proud moment - not just for myself but for my family and friends. "I am grateful to have been recognised but my priority is to try to help to educate society and myself. If it doesn't start from within, then there's no way you can help others. I'm learning every day." He has become a leading campaigner in the fight against racism and discrimination in the wider world of sport. Our new series of 'History' articles will look at the early history of Greater Manchester's biggest institutions. This history article will take you to 1939. (This video uploaded onto YouTube by Nipa Ter contains a fairly detailed history of Manchester United news) Manchester United was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot in Newton Heath. The team initially played games against other departments and railway companies, but on 20 November 1880, they competed in their first recorded match; wearing the colours of the railway company – green and gold – they were defeated 6–0 by Bolton Wanderers' reserve team.
