Cult Heroes of Greater Manchester 1/3

A cult hero is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as 'a writer, musician, artist, or other public figure who is greatly admired by a relatively small audience or is influential despite limited commercial success.'

This is Manchester: we do things differently round here

Let's have a look at some cult heroes that have made an impact on Greater Manchester

Clint Boon

A man who originally rose to fame as keyboard player of the Inspiral Carpets. He is now known for being a DJ on XS Manchester and in the nightclub South. He has developed something of a cult following who call themselves the 'Boon Army'.

During lockdown, he created a lifeline for many struggling with his #DiscoRescue.

Tony Wilson

What more can be said about this man? We have already featured an article on him which can be found on the link below.

Icons of Greater Manchester: Tony Wilson

Tony Walsh

A man and his poem who became symbols of hope for Greater Manchester and beyond.

Back in 2012, local charity Forever Manchester commissioned local poet Tony Walsh (aka Longfella) to create a poem that encapsulates the spirit and communities of Greater Manchester. That poem was 'This is The Place'.

Less than 24 hours after the attack on Manchester Arena, Tony performed the poem at the vigil at Manchester Town Hall, in front millions of people across the world on TV.

Football cult heroes

Our friends at Greater Manchester Football published a list of cult heroes who have played for Greater Manchester's football teams.

Denis Irwin is one example. He played a part in Oldham Athletic's historic 1989/1990 season before moving to Manchester United. It was here where he won almost every major trophy available to him.

 More cult heroes coming soon.
