Local health leaders believe we should delay lifting of lockdown

Public health officials believe we should delay lifting the last of  Covid restrictions to 'stop us going backwards'.

The government is expected to announce on Monday whether it will remove the last of the restrictions seven days later.

Minister Nadhim Zahawi believes we need to be careful not to squander the progress made in tackling the virus.

The final stage of removing restrictions from across the country would see all  limits on social contact removed. Nightclubs would reopen, and restrictions on performances, weddings and other life events would also be lifted.

But concerns about the spread of the Delta variant, first identified in India and now dominant in the UK, have led some scientists to call for a delay to ending lockdown.

Another 8,125 virus cases were recorded in the UK on Friday, according to official figures, and another 17 people died within 28 days of a positive test.
