2020 Olympics - Stay informed

It has already been a great summer of sport. England's run to the final of Euro 2020 was truly memorable.

Like the Euros, the Olympic Games were meant to take place last summer but didn't for obvious reasons.

Some history for you

The modern Olympic Games are leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which  athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. 

The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The events are normally held every four years, alternating between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years in the four-year period.

The games creation were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894, leading to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. 

The IOC is now the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.

The relative evolution of the games has resulted in some huge changes being made.
