News from Greater Manchester Police

Two men have been arrested following a carjacking in Leigh. Police were called around 12.50am on Sunday 22 August to Westminster Drive, Leigh to a report of a carjacking.

Enquiries established two males, armed with knives, had approached a man stood outside his black VW Golf on the street and demanded he hands over the keys to the car.

Operation Helix has been launched in parts of Oldham. The aim of the operation is to tackle serious violent crime among young people.

Greater Manchester Police say that this is a multi-agency proactive response aimed at tackling serious youth violence in the Failsworth, Hollinwood and Limeside areas of Oldham.

Through the operation, GMP and partners will be seeking to educate young people, to prevent them and other members of our communities from suffering harm at the hands of violent crime. GMP will also continue to pursue anyone involved in this kind of criminal activity.

Music news

Foo Fighters announce Emirates Old Trafford show. The legendary band announced last week that they are are heading out on a massive UK stadium tour next summer, this includes a show at Emirates Old Trafford. For more information, click the tweet below.

Music fans are also on the countdown to the Courteeners show at the same venue. The Middleton haven't had a big outdoor gig in Manchester since their amazing Heaton Park performance in 2019. Fans are clearly excited. The band have also announced a number of warm up performances.

Football  

Wigan win away at Charlton. Two late goals from Darikwa and McClean saw Wigan pick up a great three points at Charlton Athletic and move upto 9th place in the League One table. As you can see in the video below, Wigan fans were in great voice.

Manchester City thrash Norwich. Manchester City were back to winning ways after an emphatic win over Norwich City at the Etihad. It was a different story for Manchester United as they were held away at Southampton. 

Further down the pyramid. Avro FC got a credible draw against Runcorn Linnets in their FA Cup qualifying match. The replay is on Tuesday and Greater Manchester Football will have the post match reaction.
