Sports News update: 12/09/21

Unless you're an England cricket fan, it's been another fun weekend of sport for teams representing Greater Manchester.

Let's have a look at what's been going on.

Football news

Manchester United 4 - 1 Newcastle United

Cristiano Ronaldo played his first game in the red of Manchester United since May 2009 and helped his side to a 4-1 win over Newcastle United

Ronaldo was cheered from the moment he left the team bus on its arrival Old Trafford throughout the warm-up and then once the game had started, Ronaldo repaid the backing in the best way.

He broke the deadlock just before half-time when he scored from a few yards after Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman spilled Mason Greenwood's shot.

The Geordies had briefly threatened to spoil the party after Saint-Maximin equalised. A second goal from Ronaldo alongside strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard saw United home comfortably.

Leicester City 0 - 1 Manchester City

Manchester City picked up their third straight win after battling to win against Leicester City

Bernardo Silva scored for City in the 62nd minute. Jamie Vardy had previously had a goal ruled out through VAR.

The Manchester City manager was clearly happy with the win and performance.

England v India test cancelled

The fifth Test between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford was cancelled shortly before 9am on the first day due to concerns among the Indian players about the Covid cases in their camp.

The ECB’s official statement said India had forfeited the game. This would have meant a 2-2 series draw. This was soon changed to remove the word forfeit

The BCCI have offered to play the game at a later date if possible, though if this happens it is likely be a one-off Test rather than part of the 2021 series.

Rugby League news

Warrington 20 - 19 Salford Red Devils

Salford Red Devils, who are out of play-off contention, gave Warrington a real run for their money with Ken Sio scoring a brace to take his try tally to seventeen for the season.

Whilst the end result was ultimately a huge disappointment for everyone associated with the club, everyone would have been pleased with the performance.
